4 Things You Might Not Know About What’s Happening in Alabama
Author: Sheryne Nachawati
No matter your stance on abortion, you might not really know all the facts about Alabama’s Abortion Ban Law. We don’t doubt you’re seeing posts flooding through your Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook feeds... but we just want to raise some awareness on the situation.
Alabama passed, what is currently the most restrictive Abortion Ban, disallowing any woman to get an abortion regardless of her age or the circumstances in which she became pregnant. And yes, this blankets rape and incest. The only exception to the law would be if it poses a “serious health risk” to the mother. There are only four women on the Alabama senate (who all voted against it). As in, the law got passed by the 25 other males that sit on the Alabama senate.
Okay, you knew that.
But, today we’re going to clear up some of the misinformation about some of the major points.. or just keep you informed.
1. The bans are not in effect yet.
This means those who have appointments scheduled can still have the procedure.
2. The bill forces the liabilities on the doctors that perform the abortion, without putting any liability on the women getting the procedure.
There was some misinformation indicating that women would also be subject to imprisonment, but legislation states:
“This bill would provide that a woman who receives an abortion will not be held criminally culpable or civilly liable for receiving the abortion," the legislation states.
The doctor would be charged with a class A felony. What does this mean? This means that they can spend anywhere between 10 and 99 years under imprisonment for performing a procedure. If the procedure fails, and it just becomes an attempt, the doctor will be charged with a class B felony.
3. Plan B is still legal because it is not an abortion pill.
It is still available over the counter, since it is technically a contraceptive.
4. This is not about the preservation of life, it is more about taking away women’s reproductive rights and rights for choice.
Ladies, what this law is doing is — is not addressing whether you are pro-abortion or anti-abortion. This law takes away a woman’s ability to choose the life she wants to live.
With this law, a woman loses the right to choose… bringing us back to pre-Roe vs. Wade (arguably even further back).
No matter your stance on this issue, we hope you learned something new about this extremely relevant political topic!

Elizabeth Warren, another badass female, has a plan that you can read more about it right here. Corey Booker is also taking a stance and not letting women fight the ban alone. You can read more about the action he is taking here.
